Waiting By The Phone

As anyone who has adopted internationally knows, the telephone can be the enemy.  First we wait and wait for a referral, then we wait and wait for travel.  Unlike much of the rest of the adoption process, these bits of very important information are relayed via the telephone rather than email.

The phone rings:  Maybe it’s the agency calling with a referral!!!  No.

The phone rings:  Maybe it’s the agency calling with a referral!!!  No.

This scenario repeats until the referral comes.  Then, and only then, it changes.

The phone rings:  Maybe it’s the agency calling with a travel date!!!  No.

The phone rings:  Maybe it’s the agency calling with a travel date!!!  No.

So far this time around I haven’t really gotten to the point where the ringing telephone is the worst kind of torture.  I knew it would be a long wait for referral, unlike last time.  I knew we would be phenomenally lucky to get a referral in March.  This is why I haven’t been jumping every time the phone rings.

Actually, I’m pretty good at ignoring the telephone.  Since we home school, the phone is pretty much a severe disruption if I allow it to be, so I don’t.  I ignore it and let the machine get it.  Until lately.

March is almost over, so now I’m starting to check the caller ID when I hear the phone ring.  I mean, it would have been really something to get a referral in March, but April . . . well, surely we’ll get a referral in April. (ha)

Truthfully, waiting for the referral call is nothing compared to waiting for the travel call.  For me anyway.  By the time the travel call comes you have pictures of your child, information about your child, worry for your child’s well being, a desperation to get your child home as soon as possible so that s/he doesn’t continue to become more and more bonded to whatever his/her current care-giving situation is, thereby making the trauma of a getting a new family even more difficult.

But still . . . the phone rang today, and I just had to check.  I mean, sure, if it were the agency I could just pick up when I hear our coordinator start to leave a message on the machine . . . but, no . . . I just had to check . . .

This could become a problem.

And George, if you’re out there, Tewt the Newt says hello.
